How to Use Application Passwords for Content Hurricane

TL;DR:

To connect Content Hurricane securely, you’ll need an Application Password.

  • How to Generate: Go to your WordPress user profile by logging in as an admin, clicking the top-right profile pictures. Find the “Application Passwords” section, create a new one, and copy it.
  • Important Notes:
    • 2FA often required or application passwords will be de-activated
    • Free WordPress.com sites block this; use HTML copy-paste.
    • Security plugins (e.g., Wordfence) might disable them by default; check their settings to enable.

Introduction: To securely connect Content Hurricane to your WordPress site, you’ll often need an Application Password. This is a special password that lets apps like ours connect to your site without using your main WordPress login. It’s especially important if you have Two-Step Authentication (2FA) enabled.

Key Considerations Before You Start:

  • 2FA Requirement: For Application Passwords to be available on some hosts like WordPress.com, your account must have Two-Step Authentication (2FA) enabled. If 2FA isn’t on, this feature won’t appear. It’s a critical security measure.
  • WordPress.com Free Tier Limitations: If you are using a free WordPress.com website, the Application Password feature is disabled by WordPress.com. This is beyond our control; they use it to encourage plan upgrades. For these sites, you will need to use Content Hurricane’s direct HTML copy-paste functionality to publish.
  • Security Plugin Conflicts (e.g., Wordfence): Some security plugins, like Wordfence, disable Application Passwords by default to enhance security.
    • If you’re using Wordfence and don’t see the option, you’ll need to enable it.
    • Navigate to Wordfence settings → All options.
    • Scroll down and Uncheck the box next to “Disable WordPress application passwords.” Remember to save your changes.

Generating an Application Password:

The steps vary slightly depending on whether you’re using a WordPress.com site or a self-hosted WordPress installation.

For WordPress.com Users (with 2FA Enabled):

  1. Go to your WordPress.com profile: https://wordpress.com/me
  2. From the side menu, select Security.
  3. Choose Two-Step Authentication. (Confirm it is enabled.)
  4. Scroll down to the “Application passwords” section.
  5. Click “Add new application password.”
  6. Give it a memorable name (e.g., “Content Hurricane Connection”). Then, click “Generate Password.”
  7. WordPress.com will provide a unique, 16-character password. Copy this immediately, as it will not be displayed again. This is the password you’ll use to connect Content Hurricane.

For Self-Hosted WordPress Sites (i.e., if you’re using godaddy, amazon, or any other domain host):

  1. From your site’s WordPress dashboard, go to Users → Profile.
  2. Scroll down to the “Application Passwords” section.
  3. Type a descriptive name (e.g., “Content Hurricane”) for this new application password.
  4. Click “Add New Application Password.”
  5. Copy the generated password. It will only be displayed once.

What to Do with This Password: When connecting Content Hurricane, you will use your regular WordPress username (or email) and this newly generated Application Password instead of your main WordPress login password. This creates a secure and reliable connection, enabling Content Hurricane to publish your AI-generated content directly to your site.
